After 7 months out Slackware 12.1 is the Slackware 12.2 instead of going out to the limelight. This is an updated version of Slackware 12 packages with new and improved.

Apart from security updates, the Slackware 12.2 Kernel 2.6.27.7 and bring updates as Xfce 4.4.3, KDE 3.5.10, support for HAL, among other things.
The Slackpkg also does from now on part of the main Slackware tree in the AP series (Applications that do not require the X window system).

System binaries are linked against version 2.7 of glibc, and excellent compatibility with existing binaries. Recent versions of X are better and more hardware support, providing better performance too. The Slack 12.2 comes with gcc-4.2.4 as default compiler for C, C + +, Objective-C, and Ada Fortran-77/95 95. In addition to bringing several updated packages, of course - but without accepting the KDE 4 yet.

Desktop environments and graphical login in Slackware Linux

Slackware 12 default log-in (open session) is done through the command line without graphical support, this can be changed in order to log-in with graphic support, ie to be able to log in friendly environment.

To do this, navigate to root / etc.

Open the inittab file in a text editor, or the command line to make nano inittab.

Change:

# Default runlevel. (Do NOT set to 0 or 6)
id: 3: initdefault:

to:

# Default runlevel. (Do not set to 0 or 6)
id: 4: initdefault:

Save and exit, reboot and see that slackware will enter a mode where you will be asked graph the data so you can start your session. You will see a chart wizard logged like the image below.

In this mode will also have the options of choice concerning the different desktop environments available in Slackware that may be used (4 Xfce, Blackbox, Fluxbox, WindowMaker, etc).

You will also have the options to Shutdown and restart the computer added to the log out of your KDE.

Change graphical environment

If during installation of Slackware 12 chose to do the full installation (complete) as recomenadado can then modify your graphical environment whenever you want (4 Xfce, Blackbox, Fluxbox, WindowMaker, etc), simply typing the command before starting xwmconfig session if you use run level 3 and not 4 as described above.

This is undoubtedly one of the best projects on Linux that I know, the SMS. SMS, Slack Mini Server is a distribution (.. if that is how you can call), based on the latest Slackware 12.1 and administered through Webmin.

Dubbed the "Mini Server" this distribution has everything a powerful Linux server needs to perform its functions, from apache2, Sendmail, spamassassin, clamav, squid, iptables firewall, mysql and much more.

SMS also has embedded itself in the system TorrentFlux , a powerful php based bittorent client that can be accessed and managed from anywhere, which means that this server is not only appetizing but also by administrators for users interested in making torrent downloads in a secure manner.

This distribution may be run through a Live CD or may be installed on the hard disk through a text installer, similar to Slackware. SMS was created with linux-live scripts and the installer's text Slax .

The main objective of this project is to give novice Linux users a good choice for any home server, this server was created to connect to an ethernet cable and you're done .. all administration can be done through Webmin or through an SSH client like Putty .
